The name Shelley is generally associated with 20th century china, but in fact, pottery produced by various Shelleys has been known for over 200 years. The first potter in the family was Randle Shelley, who lived from 1706 to 1781. There is not much known regarding his wares save to say that he is believed to have begun production in 1748, but it was not until 1925 that the firm which had been operated by various family members was incorporated as "Shelley's". Shelley's popularity peaked in the 1930s, a time when some of the most famous Bone China Dinnerware designs were introduced. These included Harmonyware, Commemorative and Advertising Ware and Mabel Lucie Attwell Nursery Ware. Many of their products reflect the style of Art Nouveau and Art Deco but after the second world war, more modern and traditional designs were introduced. Shelley Potteries ceased production in 1966 and the factory as part of the Doulton Group began production of Royal Albert China. In 1971, Allied English Potteries merged with the Doulton Group. Shelley became another of the many famous names in the china industry controlled by Doulton. Some of the most popular dinnerware patterns produced on the delicate "dainty" shape were "Dainty Blue", "Regency White and Gold" and "Blue Rock". These patterns are still in demand today -- some 60+ years later. Recently, many of Shelley's designs have again become very popular by collectors and will likely continue to be sought after for many years to come. |
